Stories are omnipresent in our media-filled world, ranging from literary texts, children's books and fairy tales, journalistic eyewitness accounts and political propaganda, to television series and online customer reviews. The psychology of narratives is a topic that currently receives a lot of attention in psychology and communication science. The topic is also of high relevance to scholars in related fields such as literary studies, linguistics, or marketing. Stories are encountered by individuals and groups of all ages, from children listening to bedtime stories to adults who are confronted with a wide variety of narrative contexts with different forms and functions. Stories can provide aesthetic experiences and entertainment, but they also play an important role in education and learning. Even if they are fictional, stories can have a considerable influence on our worldviews, our moral judgments and our self-concept, and they can shape our social-cognitive abilities.
In the 2020 Würzburg Summer Module Course ‘How Stories Affect our Lives: The Psychology of Narrative Impact’ (SALON 2020), experts will share their insights on the psychological consequences of reading, listening to, or watching stories. The summer module course offers keynote lectures from leading researchers and focused, in-depth courses that advance participants' knowledge and methodological skills. The aim is to bring doctoral students working in the field together with renowned experts and to provide an open and friendly setting for discussions and scientific exchange. The summer module course will take place from July 12th to July 17th, 2020. All courses will be taught in English.
