People differ in how flexibly they adapt their behaviour to environmental conditions and to other people. External factors, such as social influences, but also internal assessments of how uncertain or controllable a situation is, influence our learning and decision-making behaviour. We study both healthy and mentally ill children, adolescents and adults to see how learning, motivation and decision-making behaviour change over the course of development. A particular focus is on the question of whether risk factors for the development of mental health problems in childhood and adolescence can be identified and whether we can thereby improve the prevention and treatment of mental health problems in different age groups.
